Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez has this evening named his 23-man squad for this summer’s Copa America.

Copa 2019

The latest edition of the Copa America, which sees the finest national sides from South America pitted against one another, is set to take place in Brazil over the coming months.

The tournament will be spread across dates between the 14th of June and 7th of July, in 5 host cities.

Hosts Brazil are currently viewed as clear favourites to emerge victorious, with the Selecao’s embarrassment of riches having been highlighted by the fact that the likes of Marcelo, Fabinho, Douglas Costa and Lucas Moura were all omitted from Tite’s final 23-man squad:

While Brazil’s squad was announced two weeks ago, the 3rd-favourites for the Copa, Uruguay, only made their panel for the tournament official this evening.

The Celeste are the most successful country in the history of the Copa, having clinched 15 titles, one more than Argentina.

And Oscar Tabarez is set to depend on a number of star names from across Europe’s top clubs in his hopes of clinching Uruguay’s latest international crown over the next two months.

There are a number of recognisable faces amongst the Celeste’s defenders, with Atletico Madrid duo Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, former Liverpool man Sebastian Coates, Juventus veteran Martin Caceres and AC Milan’s Diego Laxalt all included.

In midfield, Arsenal star Lucas Torreira gets the nod, alongside Serie A duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Matias Vecino. Real Madrid youngster Federico Valverde is also included.

Finally, up top, it comes as little surprise to see both Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani present, with Celta Vigo’s in-demand Maxi Gomez also named by Tabarez.
